How Innovation and Determination Resulted in an Australian Success Story

In the workshops and garages of more than 350,000 Australian households - and in many tens of thousands of households overseas - you can find woodworking machines and equipment painted in a distinctive bright orange, the hallmark of Melbourne-based Triton Manufacturing & Design Co. Pty. Ltd.

It began back in 1975, when George Lewin, who was then a 26 year-old journalist, was wrestling with a woodwork project. His problem was a common one... how to cut straight and square with a hand saw. The purchase of a circular saw didn't provide the solution. The cuts were still off-square - and the power saw was terrifying to use.

Determined not to waste the money he'd spent on the timber and tools, he sat down and decided to design a way to guide and control the circular saw. His first prototype was constructed from water pipe, chipboard and odds and ends, but worked well. He was able to squarely cross-cut the timber for the legs and top for the coffee table he was making.

But then he had another problem... he needed to rip the planks for the table top to width, and to tongue and groove them. His cross-cut bench was useless for this task. In a flash of lateral thinking, he hit upon the idea of modifying the bench so he could turn the saw upside down. Within a couple of hours he was accurately (although not very safely) ripping and grooving. He was so impressed with the idea, that he lost interest in the coffee table and began developing a way to make the conversion take only 30 seconds rather than a couple of hours. After patenting the idea, he appeared on "The Inventors" on ABC TV in July 1976 and realised soon after how many Australian woodworkers shared his problem in cutting quickly, accurately, and safely. He was inundated with orders and enquiries, quit his job, and plunged head-long into manufacturing and marketing his innovative saw-bench.

This resulted in the Mark 3 Workcentre which was launched in Australia in 1983. It really took off, and sales started doubling year after year, assisted by an in-store video, a national programme of in-store demonstrations, innovative marketing promotions and excellent word-of-mouth recommendations from satisfied users.

Trade and consumer magazines throughout the world started writing very favourable reviews of the Workcentre. The company began winning awards for design, marketing and business success. Exporting began and in 1986 they won a National Export Award. Profitable operations have since been established in the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and the USA.

In 1994 Triton undertook and achieved ISO9001 quality accreditation, to meet world standards of manufacture and supply.

Two years later saw the release of the Triton Series 2000 Workcentre, featuring significant product advancements. This model was quickly recognised as the Hardware Journal's Product of the Year and soon after awarded the Australian Design Mark.

Triton now boast an extensive range of woodworking products spanning from router bits and adhesive to an array of innovative Workcentre accessories and a best-selling 235mm Precision Power Saw and 1/2" Router. You can crosscut your timber to length and rip it to width (Workcentre, Triton Saw and Triton saw blades), shape, mould or plane your timber (Router Table, Triton Router, Jigsaw Kit and Stand), clamp and support your work (Superjaws, Sliding Extension Table and Multi-Stand), make neat, accurate and strong joints (Biscuit Joiner, Finger Jointer, Woodbits, Premium PVA Adhesive), face plate sand your work (Sanding Discs), and finish sand (Random Orbital Sander) all in a dust reduced environment thanks to Triton Dust Collection and the Powered Respirator - in fact from start to finish your woodwork project is made easier using Triton products.
